Overcast

Overcast is a short film about Cirro and his journey with emotions and positivity. Cirro meets Nimbus, a large brooding cloud that doesn’t have the same happy emotions Cirro does. On trying to cheer up Nimbus, Cirro battles with failure, culminating in the realization that not everyone has to be happy all the time. Take a look at both of them in our Spring poster below.

As part of the Savannah College of Art and Design’s School of Animation and Motion capstone group, Team Overcast worked just over thirty weeks to bring this beautiful cloud simulation film to screens across film festivals. Animated in Maya and simulated in Houdini, the crew faced challenging tasks such as how to use Houdini, Nuke and DaVinci Resolve. With each of us wearing multiple hats and giving tutorials on how to use different software and functions, we were able to work together as a collaborative team and produce our final film. We used Redshift to render out our in process and final shots.

Below you can see how a full shot went from storyboard to final compositing.

As a Technical Animator and Co Producer I learnt how separate parts of the pipeline, such as storyboards and lighting, are more interlinked than meets the eye. Being a Co Producer gave me a unique view on how tasks and problems looked from both sides of the table. Alongside the learning that I had on this production, it was an amazing experience to work alongside other talented artists. You can see some of our work meetings and interactions in the behind the scenes video below.
